| As part of the 'Geschutzte Fuhrungs und Funktionsfahrzeuge' (Lit; Armoured Command and Operations Vehicle) project Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH licence-produced this
version of the Panhard/Auverland A4 AVL. The vehicle performs well off-road and is hardened against landmines, fragments and small arms fire. It is to be deployed in the
Bundewehrs airborne units in a variety of roles including using it as a scout vehicle or in a command/liaison capacity.
The Gavial weighs just five tons so a CH-53 medium transport helicopter can airlift it as internal or external cargo. Despite its compact dimensions, the vehicle offers space for
up to five soldiers and their equipment. It features a 107-kW euro 3 diesel engine which enables a maximum road speed of 120km. On a single tank of fuel, the vehicle has a
range of approximately 750 km. The bulletproof glass windows provide good visibility.
To keep development and production costs down, Panhard/Auverland used off-the-shelf technologies in creating the Gavial, thus avoiding the expensive logistical chains and
running cost associated with special vehicles.
For self-defence, the Gavial can be mounted with any in-service machinegun or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher which can be operated from the safety of the vehicle's
armoured interior.
