| The LAV-A2 is an updated version of the Marines' Light Armored Vehicle series, which has been in use since the 1980s. The LAV-A2 is supplied with a Detroit 6V53T diesel
engine, developing 275 horsepower that is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Four rear wheels drive vehicle at all times, while eight wheel drive can be selected
if needed. Compared to permanent all- wheel drive system, this one allows to save fuel while driving. It is also equipped with an upgraded suspension that includes new
struts/steering knuckles, torsion bars, shocks and mounts and drive shaft, internal and external fittings for enhanced ballistic armour protection and features an automatic fire
suppression system for crew protection. In addition the vehicle is amphibious.
In February 2006, General Dynamics was awarded a contract by Marine Corps Systems Command to produce 157 LAV-A2s in six different variants. Variants include LAV-25,
anti-tank, command & control, logistics, mortar, NBCRS and MEWS. In addition a number of M1047 are being upgraded to LAV-A2 standard by the US Logistics Command
