UR-416

SERIES OF WHEELED ARMOURED VEHICLES

The UR-416, aka SO 416, TPz2, LG496, was designed primarily as a multi-role vehicle for internal security operations and is essentially the chassis of the 'Unimog' fitted with an armoured body. The first prototype was completed in 1965 with the intial production vehicles following in 1970. The hull is of all welded construction 9mm stell plate and protercts the crew from the effects of small-arms fire, shell splinters and anti-personnel mines. The engine is located at the front of the vehicle with the air inlet and outlet louvres on the vehicle nose and an engine access hatch on the sharply sloping bonnet. The Driver and Commander are located behind the engine with the Commander on the right and Driver on the left. Both have a windscreen to their front which can be covered by an armoured shutter hinged at the top. Both have a single periscope for observation when the shutter is closed. Immediately behind the crew is the personnel compartment capable of holding up to eight passengers. In each hull side there is a door in two parts; the lower part hinges downwards to from a step and the upper part is hinged in one side enabling the door to fold flat against the hull side. The door on the hull rear is similar but wider. There are five firing ports in each hull side and a further two in the rear door. In the roof is a circular single-piece hatch which opens to the rear and may have a variety of weapons mount attached to it. To the rear of the hull roof is a forward opening single-piece hatch cover, normally fitted with a single firing port, which can be used when the hatch is locked in the vertical position.
