MTK-2

CARRIER, FULL-TRACK, MINE CLEARING CHARGE

This vehicle is based on the chassis of the 2S1 self-propelled howitzer. It has a turret-like superstructure that contains three UR-77 rockets on launch ramps. These, together with the upper part of the superstructure are hydraulically elevated for firing. Range of the rockets is estimated to be 200 to 400m. Each rocket is connected via a towing line to 170m of mine clearance hose that is stowed folded in the uncovered base of the turret on the vehicle roof. The hose is connected by a cable to the vehicle which allows the vehicle crew to position the hose in the optimum breaching position once the launching has been carried out. The hose is then command detonated to clear a path up to 140m long and 2m wide through minefields with pressure fuses. When the minefield consists of tilt-rod mines, the path may be up to 8m wide. The vehicle Is capable of operating in an NBC environment and has a good cross-country capability. It has been sighted with the MTK-1(based on a BTR-50 chassis) and is its replacement.
