| The Airoll concept started as a collbaration between the Borg-Warner Corporation and the US Navy and was originally described as the first successful mating of the track and
wheel. It first appeared in 1961 and the vehicles were exrensively tested.
The tyres on each side rolled freely on axles attached to a endless chains which were driven by large sprockets at the rear of the vehicle. The lower tyres became stationary
when the track assembly pressed down on on them. Steering was by the brake & skid method which worked well and performance was very good on soft terrain and when
swimming, but ride, durabiliity and reliability were poor of hard surfaces.
