BMD-1

AIR-PORTABLE MECHANISED INFANTRY COMBAT VEHICLE

Main armament of the BMD-1 is a 73mm model 2A28 smoothbore, low pressure, short-recoil gun. This is fed from an automatic 40-round magazine to the right rear of the gunner. The weapon fires a fixed fin-stabilized HEAT round which is the same as that used in the SPG-9 infantry weapon and has a maximum effective range of 1300 m. A 7.62 mm PKT machine gun is mounted coaxially to the right of the main armament and is fed from a continuous belt of 2000 rounds, honeycombed in an ammunition box mounted below the weapon. A cartridge case and link collector are mounted in the turret basket. Mounted over the main armament is a launcher rail for a SAGGER ATGM. Two missiles are carried inside the turret and are loaded via a loading rail through a hatch in the forward part of the turret roof. The bow machine gunner sits to the driver's right and aims the two bow-mounted 7.62mm PKT machine guns. The two machine guns are mounted one either side of the vehicle's front firing forwards.
