In n1944 The US Marines faced a serious problem with the forthcoming assault on Tinian in that the island had many steep and dangerous coral reefs and they had to get past
these to take the island. After some experimenting an LVT-based carpet layer designed by a US Navy Captain called Paul Halloran was used. The LVT had a superstructure
added on top which held a carpet of wooden beams joined together by steel cable. Part of the superstructure dropped over the front of the LVT and had grippers which, when
the LVT reversed held the log carpet in place and this was then reinforced by sections of PSP matting. After this the LVTs could safetly cross the reef.
Ten vehicles were built for the assault and all were used succesfully.
