A number of LVT-1 were fitted with improvised armour in New Zealand for the forthcoming assault on Betio. The 'armour' in question was some rusted 9mm plate found
at an abandoned drain project and it was cut and fitted by the General Motors plant in Wellington.
In addition two 30cal machine guns were fitted to the vehicles and, in some cases, a 50cal as well.
