In 1947 the US Navy investigated the possibilty of producing a version of the LVT-3 fit for use in artic conditions. THe Experimental Enginneering Station modified two LVT-3 by
enclosing the cargo compartment , insulating it and turning it into living quarters. The vehicles also received a double set of tracks and the necessary structural modifications to
handle the increased load. With the dounble tracks the ground pressure dropped from 8.6psi to 6.04 and performance in water was inreased however the double tracks
increased the friction load and reduced power output from the engine which seriously effected it handling on land. The project was abandoned.
