In 1949 the Bureau of Ships had Continental Aviation & Engineering build this Lighweight Cargo Carrier. It was similar to a normal LVT but was constructed of 3/16 - 3/8-inch
aluminium plates held together with thousands of rivets. It was powered by a Ford GAA 475hp V8 engine coupled to a three-speed transmission which gave it a speed, on land,
of 25mph and 8mph in the water. Torsialastic suspenion was used as well as an aluminium track.
Unfortunately the carrier was front-heavy and unstable in the water. Even the addition of some totally impractical inflatable pontoons on each side failed to cure its problems
and the sole prototype was abandoned.
