| The SdKfz 250 armoured halftracks were the result of a 1939 requirement for a vehicle that could transport a Halbgruppe (1/2 platoon) for the purpose of reconnaissance.
Büssing-NAG developed the armored body, and, initially, Demag made the chassis based on a modified Demag D7 tractor chassis. The chassis was shortened and the forward
wheel and torsion bar were removed.. Delays meant production did not start until June 1941 when 39 vehicles were completed. Later production was shared between Demag,
Adler, Bussing-Nag, M W Cottbus, MIAG, Phanomen and Saurer in D6 [90bhp Nl38 engine] and D7 [100bhp Maybach HL42TRKM engine] versions.
The initial production body was the 'Alte', it was complex in shape and required many man hours to build but only minor modifications were made in the design until October
1943. After that it was decided to use as many straight armored plates as possible and the 19 main armor plates were reduced to 9. This model was then refered to as the 'Neu'.
It had permanent storage boxes placed along side.
