When the Panzer Divisions were first being developed there was a requirement for an armoured personnel carrier that could carry the infantry. In 1935 it was suggested that an
armored body could be placed on the SdKfz 11. This medium half track tractor provided the basis for the chassis. Production of the chassis was undertaken by Hanomag, but the
hull and superstructure were built by Büssing-NAG. The first production models were issued to 1st Panzer Division in 1939. Eventually 22 different models were in production
The design of the body changed as the war progressed and four main styles were produced and designated as follows:
- Ausf A: First production model and built until 1940. 3 vision slits on each side with the radio antennae mounted on the right front mudguard.
- Ausf B: Built until 1940. Welded or riveted versions. Rear body view ports eliminated, Stowage reorganized. New front MG mount with shield. Antenna moved to the right back upper side over the radio.
- Ausf C: New single piece armor nose plate for the engine compartment. Top grille eliminated. Side cooling flaps replaced by side vent covers. Changes to seating
and stowage. Mudguards raised to allow for more room between tire and guard. Tools were moved to front part of mudguards. Radio was moved to under the front armor in
front of the commander's seat. Antennae relocated to right front of hull.
- Ausf D: Armored body simplified with a reverse sloping rear end. Air intakes under the engine side armor. Permanent stowage boxes fitted to the sides instead of
mudguards.
