| The Garand was the first purpose-designed self-loading rifle to be fielded by a major army. It was developed by John D Garand and started trials in 1932 being officially adopted
1936.
It used the 30-06 (7.62x63) calibre and had an eight-round internal box magazine that was reloaded using clips. The clips were always thought a disadvantage due to the fact
that when the gun ran out of ammunition the clip was ejected rather noisily.
