| The Neubaufarzeug [Lit; new construction vehicle] was ordered in 1933, and was to be a development of their earlier Grosstraktor to provide the German
Army with a 20 ton multi-turreted main tank. It was designed and manufactured by Rheinmetall-Borsing with 2 mild steel prototypes produced in 1934
and a further 3 experimental vehicles produced in 1935. These were fitted with a Krupp-designed turret and gun mount which simplified construction and
had the 7,5cm KwK and 3,7cm KwK mounted side by side.
The prototypes were used by the tank training school at Putlos until 1940. They were then attached to the Pz Abt z b V 40 (Lit; for special employment)
and in April 1940, they were shipped to Oslo in Norway and were used in action during that month. One vehicle was destroyed and the two survivors
were returned to Germany at the end of 1940.
In 1942 the name was changed to PzKpfW V and later changed to PzKpfW V (Alter Art) after the designation was transferred to the Panther.
