In 1961 production of the series began and it replaced the D-450 series upon which it was based. In contrast to most 4x4 trucks it had dual rear tyres and resembles the D-420 in
appearance.
All versions are powered by a Csepel D414h 4-cylinder, 5177cc, 100hp @ 2300rpm diesel engine linked to a 5F1R gearbox and two-speed transfer box giving a total of 10
forward & 2 reverse gears. In common with other Csepel all-wheel-drive trucks it featured twin front axle drive-shafts driven from a differential in the transfer box. This
arrangement also allowed the engine to be set lower than on conventional 4x4 trucks. In addition the military versions were fitted with a mid-chassis mounted winch.
