Following Hitlers rise to power and the formation of the Wehrmarcht in 1933 an attempt was made to rationalise the motor transport then in use.
Types were divided into three classes:
| Leichte | (light) | Approved vehicles upto 1500cc. |
| Mittlerer | (medium) | Approved vehicles upto 3000cc |
| Schwere | (heavy) | Approved vehicles over 3000cc |
