CDL

ILLUMINATION SYSTEM

Late production Grant CDL

The CDL device consisted of a high-intensity arc lamp, that by means of two reflectors, projected a beam through a vertical slit 2ft high & 2-inch wide. This could illuminate an are 350-yards wide at a 1,000-yards range. The light could be oscillated by means of a steel shutter creating a flickering effect that dazzled the enemy. This was later improved by the addition of blue & yellow filters. Initially the british vehicles lacked a main armament but they soon arrived at the conclusion that armament was neccessary and changed the hulls to those with armament. Curiously and typically, the americans arrived at the opposite conclusion, started with an armed version based on the M3 Medium and changed it to an unarmed version based on the Sherman M4A1 hull.
